Frank Llyod Wright
Frank Lloyd Wright is the most influential architect of modern architecture. Not only is his work famous in America, he has many designs around the world. His unique style may have been influenced by his experiences during his early adulthood. After quitting his first job to try to accomplish his personal goals, he became famous throughout the world. Having many well-known designs, Wright's most known designs are what he calls "Prairie Houses", and his home and workplace, Taliesin. Frank Lloyd Wright was born in Richland Center, Wisconsin, on June 8, 1867. He lived with his mom and many aunts and uncles. His dad abandoned the family in 1885 to pursue a music career. Soon after, Wright left to pursue a career of his own. After attending the University of Wisconsin, he traveled to near-by Chicago to start his first job. He worked for a company called Adler and Sullivan. This was an architectural firm that was well known throughout Chicago. There is where Wright first started expressing his ideas. On his own, he made what he called "bootleg" houses for the company's clients (Blake and Sudler 1). These were kept confidential from the firm, because Wright wanted to receive full credit for his desig
Taliesin, a place were Wright generated many ideas, was his workplace and home. He also taught others about architecture there as well. He had a room in Taliesin called the "abstract forest", and this is where the young apprentices learned from Wright (Jacobs 1). Taliesin wasn't always used as a place for others to learn. It was merely just his home, but after being plagued with many problems, he was influenced to make it more than that. In 1914, a servant killed Cheney (his mistress), 2 of her kids and 4 other people. In 1922, Frank and Catherine got a divorce and in that same year, he remarried. Then in 1925, much of Taliesin was burned down. After getting another divorce from his second wife, he remarried in 1927 to Olgivanna Milanoff. Together, they rebuilt the parts of Taliesin that burned down along with a new studio and training facility. In the mid 1930's, Wright made a replication of Taliesin in Scottsdale, Arizona, and called it Taliesin West. The purpose of this was so that his apprentices could travel there in the winter to have a warm place to work, and they alternated places as the seasons changed. Wright did more for architecture than just design. He also wrote and lectured to teach others about his works, and the basics of architecture. In a lecture he was giving in 1939, he said this: separate the noisier parts of the house from the quieter parts of the house. The floors were very uniquely designed. They were made out of concrete and had heated water pipes underneath them to keep them warm in the winter. The two main supports of the house, and the kitchen were always made of masonry (Storrer 2).
