Terrorism
It is very clear to everyone world wide that any terrorist actions, especially the most recent on September eleventh, are very wicked and evil. Everyone except the terrorists themselves, that is. So the question of what the terrorists underlying motivations are arises, and for good reason. The only person that can really answer that question is one who studies terrorism or is a terrorist himself. In the book The Anatomy of Terrorism, the author David Long reveals the point that one of the fundamental objectives of terrorists is to intimidate people by making them aware of their personal vulnerability (Long IV). It is also important to be able to decipher between terror and terrorism. In the book, Terror & Terrorism, author Frederick Hacker writes, "Terror, which is inflicted from above, is the manufacture and spread of fear by dictators, governments, and bosses. It is the attempt of the powerful to exert control through intimidation. Terrorism, which is imposed from below, is the manufacture and spread of fear by rebels, revolutionaries, and protestors. It is the attempt of the so far powerless and the would be powerful, to exert control through inti
Melman, Yossi. The Master Terrorist: The True Story Behind Abu Nidal. New York: Adama Books, 1986. When you really think about it, terrorism, unlike other threats to the peaceful and orderly manner of domestic and international life as usual, directly affects the personal lives of millions of people, not just through victimization but through out right fear. For example, thousands upon thousands of would be travelers are avoiding certain airlines or airports nowadays due to the fear of possible hijacking or sabotage. The impact of terrorism on the general public is really more psychological than it is physical. This point can be attributed to the media. Whenever there is a major terrorist attack, every news station in the world brings it directly into the living rooms of millions of families. When you really think about it, there are probably as many reasons for committing terrorist acts, as there are terrorists. Terrorist expert Julio Curino, who is featured in the Emergency News Service, points out that there are actually at least two models in the organization of terrorist groups. In the more traditional model, well-known in military and police counter-terrorist circles, terrorists are organized into "cells", or small groups and report through "cut-outs" to higher levels of decision makers. Each larger group seemingly had it's own identity, goals, and ideology (Curino). Some may ask, "Why don't we just go bomb the hell out of these Afghan people?" The answer is simply; brut force is not the solution to the long-term battle with terrorism. Yes, if were to go in and blow all of Afghanistan to smithereens it would end things temporarily, but everyone must realize that not every terrorist in the world lives in Afghanistan. There are many terrorists positioned all over the world.
