Truman

Explain all the options which Truman had when notified that the atomic bomb was ready in 1945.

President Truman, who was thrust into office when President Roosevelt suddenly died in the spring of 1945, basically had three options when it came to the use of the atomic bomb.

The military favored a full-scale invasion of the island of Japan. This was to be done in a stepping stone fashion. First by taking over the island of Kyushu in November 1945. The next step would be to capture Honshu, the main island of Japan. After Honshu was captured, the next target was Tokyo in 1946. Fighting was expected to be fierce and American casualties would have been in the hundreds of thousands.

Diplomats suggested another option to the atomic bomb. They urged the United States to negotiate a peace treaty with Japan. Diplomats urged President Truman to modify an unconditional surrender and allow Japan to surrender, but allow them to retain their Empe

ror. In my opinion, had President Truman allowed this to happen, it may have shown a sign of weakness by conceding demands to the Japanese especially after what they did to the United States at Pearl Harbor.

Truman and the entire United States wanted a fast end to the war with Japan. Under the recommendations from the Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson, Truman decided to drop the atom bomb on a Japanese city. Truman and Stimson viewed this as the best decision. This decision would ultimately save thousands of American soldiers lives. The United States dropped the first atom bomb on August 6, 1945. The atom bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima. Another bombing on August 9th left Nagasaki in ruins. Unfortunately as many as 78,000 people were killed in Hiroshima alone. Japan quickly surrendered on August 14, 1945.
