Fate, the particular portion of good and evil given to a man when he is born. Fate is given to a man and there is very little he has to say about. The amount of good or evil in him is not up to him to choose. His decisions will be based upon what he has been given and from there he will lead his life. Oedipus was given his amount of good and evil. His fate was determined to be evil in nature. Not necessarily the classical meaning of evil, but evil in that he was only out for himself and over looked many, many signs that his life would end poorly, his own blindness to the truth. He had control of his life but was given a human nature that would lead it to end badly.
The prophecy didn't have to come true. Fate gave him choices and he chose things that would lead to his own happiness without thought to others. His selfishness leads to his demise. There are many who thought that Oedipus had a tragic flaw that lead to his downfall. Fate was his tragic flaw. Fate made him what he was. His ultimate demise stepped closer and closer to him with every choice that he made. The sphinx was a kind of test for him another choice in a long line. He answered his question correctly and was able to take over Thebes, not realizing that nothing is that easy. He never questioned what would come of this or why Thebes needed a new King. Simple questions that could have saved his life. Why was the Queen a widow? What happened to the King? To take over a kingdom one should ask about its history and maybe the marriage between mother and son could have been avoided. Oedipus was so power hungry and into what this would mean for him that he never thought to find out the full story. He should have come to realize that something was wrong from the start. To say he was evil is supported by his actions. Power is a source of evil. He looked only to the money and power he could have. He didn't see the consequences of his actions. Before taking over a city you would have thought that he would have gone through the pros and cons. Fate once again plays apart in not giving him enough good sen
