Drama 2
Drama is a species of literature whose basic medium is spoken language. Moreover, drama can be read, somewhat like a poem or novel. But the word "drama" actually comes from the Greek word meaning "act." Drama as a complete work of art exists in the presentation. Its success depends on interpreters, such as directors and actors, who intervene between the dramatist and the audience. We have to take what is offered from them. Thus, much of the time we have to read the drama and re-create in our imaginations something of what the play on the stage would have been like. Since this requires considerable initiation, we must learn from both our theater experiences and the analysis of the six elements of drama. The six elements that a drama consists of are listed below with a short definition, in reference to a drama, following: Plot-the ongoing business of the characters, what they strive for, what they expect to see happen. The sequence of actions or events. Character- is either developed or flat, either individuated or typed, either symbolic or psychological. That which reveals the moral purpose of the agents. Diction- the choice of words with special care for their expressiveness. Thought- the ideas expressed in a work of art.
After watching the drama it is quite evident that the plot would not have been so great if it weren't for the characters. In a drama, it isn't exactly the plot itself that makes it a drama; rather how the characters respond to what is going on that makes the drama so interesting. If Antigone would have not been so persistent in defending her brother throughout the drama, the whole drama would have fallen apart. By being stubborn, persistent, and a female of all things, she made the drama click. Nobody was to disobey Creon, especially not a female who continually stuck up for what she believed was morally correct. This was not only apart of her character, but the plot also. With the conflict going on between Antigone and Creon, Haemon is suddenly thrust into the situation. Since he is the son of Creon and the lover of Antigone, he is forced to make a stand. When he chooses Antigone and tries to change his father's views, he is suddenly the protagonist. By trying to satisfy his beliefs, Antigone's beliefs, and conforming his father, his character is exploited and a new part of the plot transforms. If it weren't for Antigone, Haemon, and Creon there wouldn't have been any real drama. Now if you were to watch the drama and all the characters that made up the plot were to talk in a monotone voice with no inflection what so ever, you would not experience the true aspect of a drama. An element of drama is diction and of course the diction relates to the characters of a drama. It's their job in this sense to get the full aspect of the plot across to the audience. Without Haem
