Zoo Paper
On my visit to the Zoo their were many interesting animals that grabbed my attention. The first animal was the Black Necked Swan which is also known by its scientific name Cygnus Melan Coryphus. This bird appeared to be very comfortable in its new environment at the Zoo. Their were two of these magnificent birds for me to observe. Both of them had snow white bottoms, with dark black necks and a red orange colored bill. The male swan is known as a cob and the female a pen, the males are usually a bit larger than the females. The areas of origin are in open lakes and marsh lands in the Southern parts of South America, including Chile, Argentina, and Falkland Islands. The black necked swan feeds on Aquatic plants in the zoo, and as wild swan they typically feed on vegetation, insects, and fish spawn. The black necked swan is not in any danger of being extinct. The swans seem to some how stay close to each other and their behavior was calm. I find the black neck on the swan to be very interesting, I had never known of a black necked swan until my recent visit to the zoo. The swan's neck was very long it seems at times to wrap around the bottom of its body, as it dives its head into the pond.
The California Sea lions are one of the most seen mammals if you are a beach Gower. The Scientific name for the sea lion is Zalophus, mostly found in California this water bound mammal can also be found around the Galapagos Islands and Japan. The sea lion can be found on offshore rocks, quiet beaches and some times just hanging out by the edge of the peer. These mammals are great swimmers, once on a High School trip I was able to observe them swimming along side the boat. Sea lions are noted to swim up to ten miles per hour when chasing food. There diet consists of lots of fish, mollusks, and crustaceans. While the predators are Orcas, great white sharks, and humans. Although the California sea lion is not considered an endangered species, it is included in the protection given in U.S waters by the Marine Mammal Protection Act. This is very important to preserve the rights and life of all living things that roam the land and swim the waters. On my way to see the sea lion I could not ignore the loud bark that echoed through the whole park. It made me rush right over to see what was going on. As I arrived I noticed that their were three sea lions. There was one that was much larger than the others, which must have been the male. The other two were smaller one seem two be the mother and the other one the pup. The male sea lion along with the female sat along the side of the water area and relax as if they were on some sort of vacation. The male made a lot of noise as if he was trying to let the on lookers no that this was his territory.
