My article dealt with the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). SSRIs were introduced in the 1980s and have become one of the most abundantly prescribed drugs. Between the years of 1991 and 2000, prescriptions for SSRIs saw an increase of 740%. SSRIs are used to treat a wide variety of psychiatric disorders, such as depression, anxiety, phobias, eating disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
