Gender Roles In Literature.

Adolescence is a very difficult time for many, while some just go through it but with a price. This is the time when young people experience the responsibility of taking care of themselves, rejection and self-discovery. Confusion also plays an important role in adolescence. A person is not only changing physically, but also mentally and emotionally. In a play by Carson McCullers, "The Member of the Wedding", she conveys the effects of desolation in her life to that of the character, Frankie Adams. By picking the age 12 for Frankie, McCullers is able to focus on the uncomfortable state of "becoming".

Twelve-year-old Frankie Addams, struggles with her social status in society much like McCullers did during her youth. Although the reading suggests that Frankie is fearless, she was afraid on the idea and prospect of not belonging to any group. For example, when Frankie hears the news about the new member of the club, she was upset. "That pasty fat girl with those tacky pig tails"(McCullers, 1382). Similar to Frankie, McCullers experiences loneliness and pain in her youth. She was born Lula Carson Smith. To seek out a new identity, she chooses to go by her middle name. By doing so, Carson wanted to be different, and be a member
