A detailed Summary of Digestive System
The digestive system consists of a series of hollow organs that are joined in a long, twisting tube from the mouth to the anus. The inside lining of this tube is the mucosa. The mucosa in the mouth, stomach, and small intestine contain tiny glands that promote juices to help digest food.
There are also two solid digestive organs called the liver and the pancreas, which also produce juices. These juices reach the intestines through small tubes. Also, other organ systems, for example, the nerves and blood, play major roles in the digestive system.
Our food and drink has to be changed into smaller molecules of nutrients before they can be absorbed into the bloodstream and carried to cells throughout the body.
Digestion begins in the mouth and completed in the small intestine. The chemical process varies depending on what type of food it is.
The hollow organs of the digestive system contain muscle, which enable their walls to move. This propels food and liquid and also mixes the contents within each organ. This movement is called peristalsis and is found in the oesophagus, stomach and intestine.
