Taking care of an automobile is very simple. Filling a car up with gasoline and changing the oil are the basics for maintaining a car's engine. Changing gasoline is easy. The car's gasoline tank gets low and all it requires is a one step fill up at the gas station. The process of an oil change is much more complex. Most cars and motorcycles have physical indicators indicating the oil needs to be checked. Checking the oil tank manually is a more efficient way to determine the need for an oil change. Under the hood of the car, you must locate the oil dipstick, which is the device that measures the amount of oil in the engine. Lift the dipstick so it is completely exposed, wipe the dipstick clean with a rag and place the dipstick back. Pull up the dipstick once more and this will give you a proper measurement of how much oil is in the engine. If oil appears above the indicated line on the dipstick the oil does not need to be changed. If the oil is below the line an oil change is necessary.
You, or any person, can either go to a mechanic's garage and pay around 25-thirty dollars for an oil change, or do it at home. An oil change by the car owner at home will cost only about twelve dollars. Any auto parts store will have the
The first step is to slide underneath the front of the car. You will notice a relatively large tank with a bolt protruding from the bottom or side of the tank. That is the oil tank. Place the shallow pan (wide enough to hold four-five quarts) under the bolt of the tank. Carefully unscrew the bolt and make sure not to round the edges of it, if the edges do get rounded use a vice grip for future oil changes. The bolt comes off easily and the oil will begin to drain from the tank. The oil will come out fast, make sure the pan is in a position to catch the oil. When the tank is finished draining screw the bolt back on, make sure it is on tight. The next step is to locate the oil filter; normally it is easily accessible on the side of the engine. Remove the filter with a filter wrench, place the wrench around the filter and gently rotate in a counter-clockwise direction. There is oil in the filter so be careful and try to pour it inside the oil pan. Screw in the new filter by rotating it in a clockwise direction. Make sure not to overtighten the filter. The final step is to pour the new oil into the oil tank. The cap is located on top of your engine, usually marked "oil." Do not spill the oil, and to make pouring the oil in easier, you should use a funnel. Screw the cap back on and the oil and filter
