Surf's Up
The sun, the beach, the salty ocean water---all of these things remind me of surfing. Watching people surf on television or at the beach, looks rather easy, but it's not. Surfing is exciting and fun, but definitely not easy. These complicated factors include; the weather, the huge waves and the dangerous waters beneath. The whole learning process can be a bit intimidating. Before you get started there are a few things that you must know. The very first thing you need is equipment. Luckily surfing is one of those sports that do not have a lot of equipment and it is fairly cheap. The most important thing you need is a surf board. Since you are a beginner you should buy a used board. This is a good idea because boards are expensive and fragile. The surf board is the part that you stand on while gliding along the waves. The second thing you'll need is called a leash. The leash is strapped to your ankle and connects up to your board which prevents it the board from floating away. Board wax is the third piece of equipment that is needed. It is used to smooth the underside of your board to give traction. If your board already has traction you might not need the wax. Unless you are planning on surfing at a
Once you have found a partner, you will need to find a place to surf. Don't go to the most famous or crowded beach. Start at a mellow beach with gentle waves and a sand bottom. Another thing to do is to go to your local surf shop and ask the workers for information. Be honest about your abilities, surfers are very nice people and won't make fun of you! Once you have master all of these things there is nothing left to learn that you won't be able to teach yourself. The key is to go for those bigger waves, don't be afraid of them. Once you have ridden your first wave you'll never look back. Now that you have all the equipment, you need to find a partner. This is one of the most important things in learning how to surf. Besides the obvious safety reasons, your partner will be there to give you moral support. You need to find someone good who will teach you to surf or find someone that wants to learn and teach each other. I would suggest finding someone that wants to learn and teach each other. It is kind of hard when one person is better than the other. You will get frustrated easily and won't have as much fun. You have noted where the surfers are heading out so grab your gear and head down to the water. Before you put your leash on decide whether you are going to be a regular foot, which is left foot forward, or a goofy foot, which is right foot forward. Try both ways on the shore to see which feels better. When your stance is decided attach your leash to your back ankle. Walk out until the water is about waist deep and get on your board. Position yourself face down on the board, so the nose of your board (front end) is 2 to 3 inches out of the water. This allows you to keep the board on top of the water in a hydroplane position. To begin surfing you first paddle to get through the white part of the waves to the calm area. This is done by moving your arms in a swimming motion to direct your body and board to your destination. To properly paddle out use even alternating arm strokes. Going through white water is an obstacle that you will encounter
