The Hurricane: Survival of the Emotionally Fit

The Hurricane, a movie that is as compelling and tumultuous as the life of the main character, Rubin ?Hurricane? Carter. Rubin?s overwhelming life difficulties, forced him to withdraw and emotionally detach himself from humanity in order to manage obstacles in his life. By utilizing emotional detachment, an individual isolates their emotions. He or she does not need or desire anything outside of self, thus allowing him or her to elevate beyond the person, place or situation that confines them.

The Hurricane is a movie about survival. The movie detailed the events in the life of Rubin ?Hurricane? Carter. Throughout the movie, Rubin experienced many life-altering situations, which taught him various lessons on how to cope. When he was eleven, Rubin was sentenced to a home for boys in Jamesburg, for a crime he did not commit. Jamesburg taught Rubin about anger, hostility, distrust, self-preservation and most of all survival. When Rubin was nineteen, he escaped and joined the Army. The Army was a turning point for Rubin. The Army taught Rubin about self. Rubin made the statement, ?In the Army, I learned that knowledge of


Rubin was immediately taken to prison where he was expected to conform to life in prison. However, Rubin had a different point of view. When he was told to strip and put on prison clothes with his assigned inmate number, he declined and was sent to solitary confinement for ninety days. Solitary confinement was a defining moment in the life of Rubin ?Hurricane? Carter. The time spent in solitary confinement forced him to delve into self. Rubin took control of his mind and buried his emotions deep inside of himself. It was the only way he would survive solitary confinement. Thus, begins his defense mechanism for survival: emotional detachment.

Rubin ?Hurricane? Carter surpassed prejudice, hatred, illiteracy and poverty by emotionally detaching himself from situations that could have killed him. During a visit from the Canadians and Lesra, Terry asked Rubin, ?How do you accept it (the sentence)?? Rubin responded by saying, ? I have to focus on the fact that I have to do the time. I do that by not allowing myself to want or to need anything. I?m free in here (pointing to his chest). Because there is nothing I want out here (looking around the room)! Emotional detachment m
