The Hurricane, a movie that is as compelling and tumultuous as the life of the main character, Rubin ?Hurricane? Carter. Rubin?s overwhelming life difficulties, forced him to withdraw and emotionally detach himself from humanity in order to manage obstacles in his life. By utilizing emotional detachment, an individual isolates their emotions. He or she does not need or desire anything outside of self, thus allowing him or her to elevate beyond the person, place or situation that confines them.

When he was told to strip and put on prison clothes with his assigned inmate number, he declined and was sent to solitary confinement for ninety days. Solitary confinement was a defining moment in the life of Rubin ?Hurricane? Carter. The time spent in solitary confinement forced him to delve into self. Rubin took control of his mind and buried his emotions deep inside of himself. It was the only way he would survive solitary confinement. Thus, begins his defense mechanism for survival: emotional detachment.
