Violence

When you think of East Carolina University what comes to mind, partying, drinking, violence, rape, or maybe drugs. Most students choose ECU because it's a so-called party school, but when choosing a college does the student think about the many violent and potentially threatening situations that exist on most of our nation's college campus today. Ninety percent of all campus rapes occur when alcohol has been used, and 60% of all sexually transmitted diseases are transferred when people are intoxicated. The potential problem of rape, binge drinking, and drug abuse on our college campuses could possibly be controlled if campus administrators and communities would place stronger rules on all organized parties, administer drug testing for all students upon admission, and pay closer attention to the drinking age.

All college administrators need to consider taking action, with some kind of a "zero tolerance" program for all alcohol related violence, which includes not only acquaintance rape, assault, and fighting but also alcohol impaired driving and vandalism. For example, by setting up DWI checkpoints on campus on Friday and Saturday nights, students are less likely to drive if they have been drinking or they would designate a trusted person to stay sober. By paying closer attention to the drinking age on campus, it would probity reduce many potential threatening situations that students face everyday.

In addition, the problem of rape, binge drinking, and drug abuse can be decreased with drug testing for admission to any of the nation's colleges. If we used drug testing for admissions, students with a confirmed problem wouldn't be allow to bring that problem to campus, because they wouldn't be allowed to attend school with a positive drug test. Most users would not even apply to the school that would decrease the availability of drugs on campus. If people on campus don't have easy access to drugs a
