The Difference between Actions and Thoughts

The difference between Rieux's response and that of Paneloux is simple it is demonstrated by there different choices. A terrible thing had occurred and it was difficult to deal with, Rieux and Paneloux are two individuals with different attitudes, background, and ideas. How anyone would respond to something horrific, which disturbs the daily routines will always vary.

There are those who are not affected by the changes, they notice changes in their environment but will adapt to the situation and continue with their daily routines. Rieux was an advocate for this group he fit the plague into his regular routine and attempted to continue normally as though he had received no disturbance in his life. There are also those who discuss the problem, but then neglect to take any action to bring about to a resolution. Paneloux would be considered their spokesmen, one can distinguish that from the words in his first sermon. He would condemn the people of Oran calling all who were infected sinners but still he took no action to correct he problem. Finally there are those who contemplate the situation


. They realize that there has been a change, that things have taken a turn for the worst, as they dwell on it they begin to feel compelled to react. These are they who take action to accomplish what need to be resolved to right the wrong done against them, they dedicate their lives, there thoughts, and there bodies to fighting for the cause. Both Rieux and Panleoux became revolutionaries after the death of the child. The difference was demonstrated by there hard work and dedication to helping victim of the plague. People's responses to different trials and tribulations vary by there willingness to escape their comfort zone and take the necessary actions. They were all affected by the same event whether there view was that of a conformist, activists or a revolutionary the only difference is their response to the changes in their environment.

There are so many different kinds of people many more than what have been discussed. Most individuals become comfortable in there area, they will never grow until they are forced into a situation where it behooves them to grow and take a look at eh world using two eyes. Rieux and Paneloux hard to deal with horrible situations, they chose to grow from them, and did become better people as a result of their decision.

People should strive to become revolutionaries for it is they that* who combine the logic of both the conformist and the activist so not to go overboard with there actions. They realize that things are not as they should be and take action to evoke a change. Without the works of these people many instances would not have been rectified. In the novel both Rieux and Paneloux exhibited revolutionary attitudes after the death of the child. Rieux applied an attitude of a loving, caring and feeling towards his medicine rather than the impersonal method to which he had become accustom. Paneloux likewise change his attitude which was made evident by his second sermon, where he exhibits more passion and togetherness with the people or Oran. Also after his second sermon he changed his activist attitude and took action joining the fight to stop the spread of the plague. It took an awful even to bring both Rieux and Paneloux together. The thoughts of these two men from completely different walks of life, one non believer who could not understand how a so called loving God could allow for such suffering and the other a firm believer to condemned all the sinners for it was his belief that the plague was their punishment for not living proper Christian lives.
