Dreams

Dreams have been studied for hundreds of years. Many theories of origin, meaning, and functions have been developed. People sometimes base major life decisions on the contents of dreams, while others pay them no attention at all. Dreams do not have certain rules to go by. The study, function, and dimensions of dreams have not been agreed upon yet.

In 1952, a researcher noticed that at certain times during the sleep period the eyes of the subjects could be seen stirring beneath their closed lids. The motions were called "Rapid eye movements" and this phase of sleep is called REM periods. During REM sleep, it was found that the flow of blood to the brain increased, the brain's temperature increased, and particular brain wave patterns showed up on an electroencephalograph (Parker, 1995). A person enters rapid eyes movements (REM) about every 90 minutes (Richmond, 2000). REM sleep only occurs in warm-blooded vertebrates, such as birds and mammals (Counter Points in Science, 1997). Dreams had during REM dreaming are more detailed than dreams that occur in other periods of sleep (Parker, 1995).

Dreams are difficult to understand because when a person is conscious they can think of everything they have to say and dreams just happen with the contents meaning other than what a person dreams. There are many interpretations for a given dream. Manifest dream content is the dreamer's basic story line as the dreamer recalls it. Latent dream content is the unconscious wishes the dreamer has suppressed. A person can only interpret what a particular symbol means in their individual dream. A person has their own dream language, devised by their subconscious to tell a person stories that have special meaning to them.

Studies have shown that everyone remembers at least one dream they have had and everyone can learn to remember more of their dreams. A person should not immediately want to write down the parts of dreams that they remember after waking, but lie still and try to let the dream remain in their mind until feeling confident enough to record it. Some actions will make a person remember dreams later on. Some people have trouble remembering their dreams. There are two main reasons why a person forgets their dreams; one is embarrassment. People dream things that they would not do in real life. The other reason dreams are forgotten is because people do not place much importance on them in modern culture. People also try and forget their dreams because the images they saw were troubling or awkward. The more horrifying a dream is, the more likely it is
