Terror In the Smokies
Vacation is usually a time when you can relax and enjoy yourself. A time when you can forget about all of life's little worries. On one recent trip to the Smokey Mountains, however, I was reminded of how precious life can be.My son and I had headed out to spend a long weekend in the Smokey Mountain National Park in Tennessee. Waking up on Sunday morning, we decided that it was the perfect day to go hiking. We packed up the truck with lunch and a few other essentials, and drove up to the parking area where a lot of the good trails began. We left most of the stuff in the truck when we started out, thinking we would come back and eat lunch after we were done with our hike. After hiking about 3 miles, we came upon a large waterfall. The water rushed down from almost 100 feet above. We had passed several small waterfalls along the way, but those paled in comparison to this one. At the base of th

My son and I decided it looked like fun. Our swim trunks back in the truck, I volunteered to go back and get them while he waited there. Just as I thought I was going to plunge to my certain death, I grabbed hold of a small rock with a sharp edge. It wasn't very big, but it was enough to stop my progress towards the edge. After about 20 minutes, I worked my way back to the side where I had started. I walked back up the hill to the parking area and down the original trail where my son was waiting and wondering why I had taken so long. Everything started out alright
