Stem Cells
A detailed Summary of Stem Cells
Scientists are always trying to find new ways to help cure humans of problems like cancer, or disease. Experiments are the most common way to try and find if a new treatment works. Many times new treatments are tested on animals before humans. After these are made sure to work on animals, humans are the next step. Human testing has caused an argument. A lot of people believe that it is wrong to experiment on humans because one will never know the outcome. Others say that we must experiment on humans or we will never be able to make new breakthroughs.
It takes a very long time for a new treatment to even be ready for human testing. First a treatments are tested on animals, like rats. People don't just get a shot with a new vaccine in it. The Doctor first tells them of everything that can happen to them. The person must agree, and they are usually paid a generous amount of money for their time and cooperation. Once they are given the new medication, the doctor keeps a very close eye on the patient and makes sure nothing goes wrong. Human testing is a very serious thing that is not taken lightly.
One of the most common experimental treatments for humans nowadays is stem cell resear

Uses for stem cells are being discovered all of the time. There are a few recent examples of new uses for stem cells that have been revealed in the past couple of months.
Stem cell research is a very controversial issue. Once researchers learn exactly what the uses are for these stem cells using them for treatment will probably become more common. Many believe that stem cell research is wrong. Stem cells can be taken from a few different places. Stem cells were first taken from human bone marrow, another way to got stem cells has been found and that is through human embryos. Taking stem cells from human embryos is what is controversial. Many people believe that this is wrong because in some places embryos are made just for the stem cells and then they are discarded. People believe that these embryos are actually humans being killed for the cells. A stem cell must be taken from a human embryo within about the first week. At this time an embryo is not even a fetus, technically these embryos are just "microscopic groupings of cells" (Kinsley).
In Washington, stem cells were turned into tissue that makes insulin. This is a step toward a new treatment for curing patients who are diabetic. According to Paul Recer, this "could eventually lead to using embryonic stem cells to make insulin producing islets, including beta cells that produce insulin." The ultimate goal will be to transplant beta cells made by embryonic stem cells into diabetics (Recer).
On November 5, researchers in Orlando, Florida discovered that stem cells can be turned into nervous system c
