Blue Beard Analytic Essay

When someone mentions the word fairy tale, what do you think? Perhaps you think of beautiful gowns, prince charming, seven little wonderful men, or even a glass slipper. Well, this particular fairy tale is a little different from the ones that you might have heard. Where deception is the issue, instead of love, romance, and passion. In the fairy tale, "The Blue Beard", translated by Charles Perrault, deception and its relationship to female curiosity makes this story one that will stay in the mind of its readers for a long period of time.

Deception in this fairy tale occurs in different settings. In the first setting, Blue Beard takes his neighbor and her lovely daughters, who he admires, to his mansion out in the country and spoils them with festivity and riches to flatter them. Deception is presented by flattery and leads them farther from the truth; Blue Beard is a murderer. In the second setting, Blue Beard is leaving for a trip and gives his wife the keys to everything he owns; therefore, attempting to satisfy her with riches and direct her attention from the forbidden place that he does

In my opinion, the story does not suggest any further patterns than the ones that are pretty obvious. The relationship between curiosity and deception is pretty deep in itself. It is a cause and an effect relationship. Because of the curiosity of both parties there is deceit. The wife being curious of a mysterious room deceives her husband. And the husband being curious about the wife's actions deceives the wife.

not want her to ever go, deceiving her of the truth that lies underneath her nose behind the closet door. This too is how deception is presented by flattery. In the next setting, this time, the wife promises her husband that she will obey him. Here, deception is presented by her promise to obey and not open the closet that she was forbidden to unlock. The wife deceives Blue Beard and opens the closet anyway. In the last setting, when the wife is to die from Blue Beard's cutlass, she begs him to allow her to go to her chambers to pray. Deception in this setting is presented by sympathy. Blue Beard allows his wife to pray before she dies, but she goes upstairs to stall time and ask her sister, Anne, to tell her if
