Roots: Resistance vs. Assimilation
In order to analyze the characters in "Roots," one must first take into consideration the reoccurring themes that correspond with the characters. There are two resurfacing themes in "Roots." Those themes are resistance and assimilation. Each character in the movies embodies at least one, if no both of these themes. The usually parallel lines of assimilation and resistance seem to somehow come dangerously close to touching, or even crossing, each other. However, in watching and understanding "Roots," there should be no questions as to why this is true. The history of the African-American has been a story of assimilation and/or resistance. When taken against their will, some slaves, such as Kunta Kente, refused to completely settle. Inside, they held true to their beliefs and their goals of once again being a free people. The truth is that each slave of this nation's past represented different places between the parallel lines of resistance and assimilation. These two totally different state of minds have two totally different, of course, result in two totally different outcomes. Looking back on the movie "Roots," Kunta Kente was beat in front of dozens of slaves who were free to walk around. No one helped Kunta. This is because they all had been assimilated already. Unfortunately, a lot of the slaves in real life were, also. The majority of people are followers, and they'll follow whatever gives them the most security. A leader, like Kunta, would have quite a time trying to incorporate all of these followers into his plans. His plans weren't secure enough.
