Almost everyone knows about the great adventures that have lead man to discover various planets, learn about the solar system, and even set foot on the moon. However, has anyone recognized the creatures, which went into space first, to make sure it was safe for humans? Before astronauts came astro-animals. Since the 1950's, more and more animals have been traveled in space. Today, almost all shuttle missions carry rats, mice, flies, and even jellyfish for scientific experiments. Other animals that have been sent into space include dogs and monkeys.

Many animals are very useful for experiments in space. In the past, the United States and the Russian/Soviet space programs used the information obtained from various missions to collect knowledge, and advance and develop the things that would be needed to support humans in space. Once it was confirmed that animals could survive in space, humans entered space, and took animals along with them.

Some people think that using animals in space is cruel, but they have clearly played a major role in space exploration. The continuing development of space travel and safety in space will be advancing in the future due to animals.
