High School Athletes Turning Pro

The topic of my final paper is the decision of young athletes to forgo college and turn professional. In thinking about why athletes make these decisions you need to understand both sides of the decision. There are benefits of turning pro and also draw backs of bypassing college. There are conservative people who believe that everyone should go to college and get an education. These are the people are that believe that it is wrong to skip college to pursue a career in sport. There are also liberals who believe that every player is different. Each player has reasons why they would or wouldn't turn pro after high school. These liberals believe that if the player thinks that it is in his best interest to bypass college then that's what needs to be done. I chose this topic because I understand both arguments for and against making the conversion to the pros. This topic would interest me if I was a student athlete looking to pursue a career in sport. The topic really interests me because I would like to be involved with college athletics, and if this situation would arise with a recruit that my school was trying to sign I would be directly affected by the decision. My perspective on sports is overall positive. This way of thinking is called structional functionalism. Sport is an institution that works with society to make everyone get what they want out of sports. In structional functionalism everything in society is equal and unrelated, everything works together to create a society that works. This way of thinking allows people to learn values and morals through sports. It also brings people together and creates social interactions. Structional functionalism allows us to create goals for ourselves and for others, and teaches us to handle adversity and change. Most people who watch sports and play it them selves like sports and if they like sports they must think that they are positive, this is structional functionalism. There are some negative things involved with structional functionalism, including over emphasis on the good things that happen and under emphasis on negative things. Also sports contributing to disruptive forms of social inequality that isn't spoke about. Trying to keep sports positive has some negative effects, but in general I believe that sports are positive in many ways, so my belief is structional functionalism.

In discussing the topic of high school athletes turning pro I would think in a structional functional perspective. While thinking about high school athletes turning pro in a structional functionalism perspective, I would have to believe that the current system is correct. The system is that a player who wants to eligible for the draft must graduate high school. Also players leaving college early must attend at least two years of classes. I believe that this is the only way that you can mandate the players. There is no way that you can make a young athlete go to college just because he needs to play basketball there. If an athlete can't get good enough grades to participate in athletics at the school he dramatically hurts his chances in being drafted. I believe that if a player and scouts believe that a player is ready to play at the professional level that he should make the jump. The player needs to have some guarantees before he commits, but if he is guaranteed money there is no reason to attend college if it is in the best interest of the athlete. If you were to mandate players to attend college for at least two years there would be some interesting debates to go along with the decision. With the new trend of bringing in players from other countries would they to have to attend a college for two years? Structional functionalism gives the player the option to do what
