A detailed Summary of Gianni Versace

Gianni Versace was one of the most talented designers in the world. Even though he has passed away, his immense skills in cutting and tailoring and the fascinating colors he used were proof of why one could easily fell in love with his designs.

Versace was born in Reggio Calabria, Italy, on December 2, 1946. He has an older brother Santo, and a younger sister Donatella. According to Nicola White, Versace's mother Franca was a quality dressmaker who imported and copied French designs for a local conservative, middle-class clientele. Versace learned the fundamentals of fashion from his mother, as he said: "the thing that made my life special was growing up in the south of Italy... with a mother who was such a character, a father who was such a poet." Versace often spoke of his mother, who was obviously an important influence upon him: "the most important relationship was with my mother, who was a strong woman, ahead of her time... a fascinating woman, very beautiful." (qtd. in White 11)

Versace studied architecture in college, and then he left college prematurely and began working as a designer and buyer at his mother's dressmaking business. His abilities brought attentions to those young clients, inclu

ded his first star client, Miss Italy, who offered him a valuable lesson in free publicity (White 12). Later He began designing in a freelance basis for manufactures in Italy. At age 25, Versace was creating ready-to-wear collections for top fashion houses of the time, including Genny, Complice and Callaghan.

As with most designers, Versace's own cultural background was a major inspiration in his work. As White wrote, "he often explained how strongly influenced he was by southern Italian history. His personal libraries were reputedly brimming with over 10,000 volumes of art history and many of the images found their way into his work in stylized form-his ubiquitous Medusa's head is probably the best known example" (White 19). Even after his death, many of his inspirations had influenced on his sister and other designers.

Gianni Versace was not a "God of fashion", nor a "genius", as some would have us believe (White 25). The existence of Gianni Versace had shock the fashion world. He was a talented designer and an outstanding businessman, who created an extremely glamorous and sexy silhouette for the fashion world. Although, he was no long with us, but what he had left for us would continues to exploit the high-fashion fantasy image.
