Respiratory Virus

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a very common virus that causes mild cold-like symptoms in adults and older healthy children. It can cause serious respiratory problems in young babies, especially those born prematurely, who have heart or lung disease, or who are immunocompromised. #

RSV was first founded in an outbreak of copious rhinorrhea in a colony of chimpanzees; the "chimpanzee coryza agent" was soon isolated from human infants with similar illnesses.#

Respiratory Synctial Virus (RSV) is an infection that is contagious that resembles the common cold a lot of times. RSV is the most common viral pathogen that causes lower respiratory tract infections in infants.# RSV infection in infancy cause severe bronchiolitis and pneumonia and may incline children to the following development of asthma, the most common chronic illness of childhood. RSV is the most single related cause of pneumonia and bronchiolitis. Epidemics of the virus are seen each winter, 80% of infections typically occur during a three-month period.# The virus is not typically severe during infancy but it is rare if it happens. (As, in my case I was born with the RSV virus and was hospitalized for eighteen

days and was put on assisted ventilation.) In infants RSV infection can spread to the bronchial tubes and lungs. The virus can also infect adults, in where the infection can cause viral pneumonia, which is sometimes followed by a bacterial infection of the lower respiratory system.#

There are risk factors that can assist you to get RSV. They are for lower respiratory illness: lack of breastfeeding, crowding, passive smoking, asthma in immediate family, increased airway reactivity in infants, anatomically small airways, season of birth, cystic fibrosis, or formation of RSV-specific IgE antibody. Some Risk factors for hospitalizations are as followed: premature birth, bronchopulmonary dysplasia (requiring supplemental oxygen), congenital heart disease particularly (lesions with increased pulmonary blood flow or pulmonary hypertension), and other chronic pulmonary disease (cystic Immunocompromised, including organ transplant recipients.) #

The symptoms of the virus can be cold-like symptoms, which include stuffy nose, cough, and sometimes an ear infection. In older children and adults RSV causes upper respiratory infection involving the nose, throat, or sinuses. Children who develop a lower respiratory tract infection often have a low-grade fever for several days.# Some more symptoms include difficult or rapid breathing and deep coughing. Symptoms in newborns and young infants may include irritability, listlessness, and poor feeding.# Some symptoms can get so severe it can lead to respiratory failure. In infants with severe RSV infection they can struggle to breath because the lack of oxygen and there may be abnormal retractions of the muscles between the ribs, as the child struggles to draw breath into infected breathing passages. Children who were born prematurely are at greater risk of having serious complications from the RSV virus. Also complications of the RSV virus that it can develop into severe breathing problems that need to be managed into a hospital.#

There is no vaccine to treat the RSV infection, but most people get better without any kind of treatment.
