The controversial book Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck is often challenged, and sometimes even banned from the reading curriculum in high schools. Although the book uses foul language, racial slurs, looks down upon women, and shows cruelty to both humans and animals the morals and inside thoughts of these characters are extremely redeeming. The loyalty George shows towards Lennie, the realistic point of view this novel displays, and the positive impact it has upon the reader definitely outweigh all of the negative aspects of the novel. Despite the fact that this reading material greatly controversial the redeeming qualities support that this novel should be put into the reading curriculum of all high school students.

The loyalty George provides to Lennie is quite remarkable. Lennie and George are complete opposites. Lennie is mentally handicapped, and is a very large man. George on the other hand is described as small and quick. In spite of the fact that they are quite different from each other they form a family like bond. This novel has an completely positive impact of the reader. Through analyzing the thoughts and actions occurring throughout the novel the reader can develop many thoughts that can have a totally positive impact on the reader. George and Lennie shared a far fetched dream about buying their own place. "We'd have our own place where we belonged and not sleep in no bunk house." (Steinbeck 57). This is a example of one future goal George and Lennie shared, although this was never accomplished this was achievable and that is apparent to the reader. This can encourage the reader to set their own goals and strive towards them, and dream about them, just like the characters in this book did. George constantly makes references to if he didn't have Lennie to worry about how nice his life would be. "I could get along so easy and so nice if I didn't have you on my tail. I could live so easy and maybe have a girl." (Steinbeck 7). Even though George realizes that his life would be much simpler without Lennie in it, he remains loyal to Lennie by allowing him to travel along with him, and looking out for him. This is a great example of loyalty. George is literally taking responsibility to take care of Lennie, and that takes selfless behavior.
