The novel To Kill A Mocking Bird by Harper Lee is the story of Jem and scout Finch and their childhood in the small town of Maycomb, Alabama. The title To Kill a Mockingbird has a thematic significance throughout the story. The characters, Tom Robinson, Boo Radley, and Atticus Finch portray "mockingbirds" who "don't do anything but sing their hearts out and give to make life better for others".

When Mrs. Maudie and Aunt Alexandria Atticus defending Tom Robinson Miss Maudie says, "we're paying the highest tribute we can pay to a man. We trust him to do right." They "trust" that Atticus will do the right thing because he always does the noble thing. Even though people don't like him for it Atticus still defends Tom Robinson because it is the noble thing to do. After the verdict has been read and Atticus is leaving the courtroom Calpurnia says, "jean Louise stand up your father's passin." All the Negroes respect Atticus for what he did with the way society treated him for defending Tom Robinson.
