A detailed Summary of Confidence


Confidence is the belief that one will perform in a correct, proper, or effective way. This belief, in my opinion, is the key to succeeding in many things we do. I can recall several circumstances in which the possession of confidence was the deciding factor between my success and failure.

Taking tests is one of the most prominent instances in which confidence is the key to success. I recently received an "A" on an important test in my geology class. The reason I performed well on the exam is because of the confidence I had in my knowledge of the test material. I prepared well for the test; therefore, I entered the classroom with the expectation of scoring high. In contrast, while studying for many previous tests, I continuously told myself the material was too hard, and I would never learn all of it. Although I had studied a great deal and probably retained much of the material, my mind was focused on certain failure; c


onsequently, I flunked the tests miserably.

Speaking publicly is another circumstance in which confidence is mandatory for success. Last year I was presented the "Star Student Award" from my high school. The Kiwanis Club had planned on giving a scholarship to the star student of that year; however, in order to receive the scholarship, this student was required to present a speech before the club that explained why he or she deserved it. I was frightened because I had never spoke in front of an audience this large before. I prepared my presentation, but my confidence level was still very low. I was glad to have a podium to hide behind; my knees were shaking with nervousness. As I stepped up on stage and faced the audience, I recognized many familiar people and noticed that most of them seemed to be smiling at me.
