Society has a certain standard that people follow to be called normal, but when a person doesn't follow those standards they are classified as a misfit. With these standards to follow society has become bias towards people who doesn't abide by them and develop absurd remarks. According to Webster's Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary: misfit is one person that is unable to adjust to one's environment or circumstances or its considered to be disturbingly different from others. We view misfits as the "weird person" in our society, but I believe that society fails to recognize that they are responsible for the shaping these people into who they are.

A misfit's behavior can be deciphered through their parents' influence, but society fails to recognize that. Parents are a major influence in our lives which is one of the factors that determines who we are and how we act. Viewing how misfits act, society is no help to their lifestyle and is instigating the behavior. I believe that society's reaction towards misfits lead to long term psychological problems and may even cause retaliation. The narrator of "The Yellow Wallpaper" and the two suspects of the Columbine High School shooting are reminders of the long term abuse how society classifies and patronize those who they feel are different which ultimately causes adverse effects. The massacre at columbine was a result of the long term abuse, On April 20, 1999 at Columbine High School suspects Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 13 people and themselves, and more than 20 were wounded. According to Brooks Brown, a close friend to the Columbine suspects, in his book "No Easy Answers: The Truth Behind Death at Columbine," the massacre was a result of the long term abuse: "People only know the top skin of Columbine, the top little part, the parts the media reported so much..."(Brown 270). We can see a similar but milder situation with our narrator who is suffering from post pardom depression. She was treated as an incompetent person by her husband John because of her condition, provoking her sickness: "What is it little girl... Don't go walking like that-you'll get cold." Forced to live in isolation in a room she hates and her husband treating her like a little child, the narrator displays the affects of society's treatment to misfits; isolation and emotional abuse.

Society holds a big part in our lives creating a person who they are and what they want to be, but if we continue to shut off people because we choose to classify them as misfits in our society we are solely to blame for their co
