Their Eyes Were Watching God

In the course of the novel "Their Eyes Were Watching God", Janie the main character a child whose hopes and dreams were taken away and the people and things around her failed her. Through her transformation and progression Janie's voice became stronger through her relationship with Logan, Jody, and Tea Cakes. Although her path of life was not straight Janie develop into a strong woman and the adult she wanted to be. Janie learned how to speak her mind and her purpose and goals throughout the novel.

Janie grew up wanting what every little girl wanted out of life, a mother to love her, to meet someone she loves and get married and live a happy life. As a child Janie grew up knowing exactly what she wanted out of live, she was free spirited young girl who wanted something greater out of life, then what was around her. The path life took her on was not a straight path. Janie took the role of someone's wife at the age of 16 fulfill her grandmother's wishes for her. Doing the time she was married to Logan Janie expressed herself to grandmother her thoughts and feelings what she expected to happen after she was married to Logan. Janie thought marriage would bring love and when that didn't happened the child within in her disappeared.


The people and things around her had failed her completely. She married three different men, and each man took her on a journey she did not expected. Yet with each marriage Janie began to find herself and became stronger. She left her first marriage to marry another man she loved and wanted to be with. Doing her second marriage with Jody, Janie was pleased with in the beginning of the marriage because she was in love with a man that turned out to be what she was looking for. Jody was able to take charge of things around him and had charm and charisma. Later on down the years Jody begin controlling Jody, by telling her what to do and how to dress and who to affiliate herself with. Janie wanted no part of it and resented Jody for trying to change her. She spoke her mind of what she wanted, but Jody would find a way to bring her down. After seven years of marriage Jody had verbally abused her in the presence of company and in isolation. Jody also started beating up on her, she would fight back with her tongue but it didn't do her any good. It mad Jody mad every time she would express herself to him. The years took the fight out of Janie; she thought she had lost her soul and her bride. She learned not to answered Jody or fight back no matter what Jody would say or do. Janie learned when
