Creeping Through the Wallpaper
A detailed Summary of Creeping Through the Wallpaper
Women often feel that society is male dominated. This may be true though it is not wise to tell a strong-willed female that. In the story "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Gilman the narrator is dominated by her husband. She is confined and kept imprisoned in a room and her mind. The most important factors in this composition are setting and symbolism. Without one of these important factors the reader would not be drawn as personally into the piece as they should've been with all of them present.
The setting is possibly the most important factors in the story. The setting of the vast colonial mansion and mostly the nursery room with barred windows gives the image of loneliness and seclusion that the narrator experiences. Also the mansion is connected to a "shaded lane". A possibility for the lane being shaded is that it could represent her path out of this illness, whether it be physical or mental, and if it is possible for her to travel upon it. And immediately after entering the mansion she becomes obsessed with the yellow wallpaper of the nurser

A common question about this story, however, is the mention of Jane in the closing sentences. "I've got out at last - in spite of you and Jane." One opinion for the explanation of Jane is that Jane is the narrator. The woman creeping around behind the wallpaper and outside is herself trying to escape this life of confinement. She is able to travel beyond the bars of the windows and "creep" outside. Despite her feeble attempts to free herself she has finally been let out. The narrator speaking to John at the end might very well be stating, "I've got out at last - in spite of you and myself." She is free from the domination of John - he has fainted and can no longer tell her what she can and can't do. She can lead her own life.
Everyone must break through the shell that confines them sometime in our life. The method used is up to us though. Whether it be violent or calm we must break through and experience life on our own. Women will forever be struggling against the domination of society by males and one day, granted, they may win. Until then everyon
