New York
If you want it you can find it in New York City from the hustle and bustle of Time Square to the serenity of a quiet park bench in Central Park you can do anything you want to in New York. Within walking distance, you can find a zoo, an aquarium, numerous museums, the fashion district, United Nations Complex, the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, China Town, Little Italy, the Yankees, and the Mets, and we can't forget some of the best restaurants in the world. I remember the first time I was forced to go to New York. My boss called me in to his office and informed me that we just signed Columbia University to an agreement. Part of the new contract required my company to send a representative to assist them with registration. I had only a few weeks to prepare for the trip and I had reservations about it. I had never wanted to visit New York, but now, not only did I have to go but I had to go alone. I never dreamed this would be my first of six trips over the next two years. Flying out on that first trip, I never thought I would fall in love with this city. I remember thinking that I would just get myself to the hotel make sure the door was locked, order room service and only leave when I had to go t
Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. They must be seen to be truly appreciated. It is amazing to realize that "twelve million people were processed at Ellis Island between 1892 and 1954, almost all of them from steerage or third class" (Historic Traveler, Mar98, Vol. 4 Issue 3, p54). My favorite spot in New York City has to be Little Italy. When you walk down the brick-lined street, you almost feel like you are in another county. The streets are filled with music and performance art. You can also find the most wonderful restaurants that the city has to offer. But will Little Italy soon be over-taken by China Town? Unfortunately, according to Vincent Cannato who wrote an article for the New Republic (Mar 98, Vol4 Issue 3) Little Italy may fall to the same fate as Yorkville. The once thriving German community has all but lost its original ethnic roots. With the Chinese-American population pushing at their borders, Little Italy may not be around for the next generation to enjoy. This ethnic community once encompassed a 24 -square-block neighborhood. Today, only two blocks from Mulberry to Canal Street are all that remain. No discussion of New York would be complete without discussing the horrible acts of September 11, 2001. I actually returned from New York on September 9th of last year. Watching the horror that was unraveling on television made me sick to my stomach. Knowing that I walked down those streets two days prior to the attacks made me realize how precious life can be a
