The Great Gatsby: a light of optimism

"Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before. It eluded us then, but that?s no matter - tomorrow we will run faster, stretch our arms further...So we beat on, boats against the current, borne ceaselessly into the past."

In his provocative novel, "The Great Gatsby", F. Scott Fitzgerald emphasizes the many themes that are relevant to its time period as well as life itself. One of Fitzgerald?s main themes, the green light, is one of the multifarious pieces of symbolism in the novel. The green light represents an ambition that people long and search for which in this case, is visible, but

utterly unreachable. The green light is the search for our dreams, hope and promise for our future.

Fitzgerald construes Jay Gatsby as an envious, jealous man who is pursuing an ambition that is being driven by his lost love in the past. The green light is a symbol for Gatsby's life. Before Jay made his wealth, he was being raised in an impoverished family in North Dakota. Growing up on a farm, he had early aspirations of becoming a wealthy, respected man.      The green light, representing a guided light for ambition, dreams, and optimism is symbolic to the American Dream. The Green light unites the hope and promise for pioneering Americans to prosper. Immigrants during this time period seeked a way to escape prejudice, and in Gatsby's case poverty, by establishing themselves to a place where prayers were becoming reality, and where America reached the apogee of freedom. Immigrants portrayed it as the American Dream while Fitzgerald made it synonymous to the "green light."

The green light is also symbolic for envy. Gatsby is seen to be a jealous character because the love of his life, Daisy, is married to another man. Gatsby throws huge, extravagant parties on a weekly base to not only come in contact with his past love, but to "fit in" or relate to the wealthy. Gatsby also portrays himself as an Oxford graduate, who is becoming wealthy on a chain of drug stores. This fairy tale person that Gatsby is trying to become leads me to believe that he is "green with envy."

n love with not only a women, but her wealth, surroundings and charm. Inferior because of Daisy's wealth, Gatsby set out a goal to receive an education, and wealth to win Daisy over. Though Gatsby made his wealth through organized crime, Gatsby's doughty effort to become
