Hamlet

What is true love? Can there be different kinds of true love? Shakespeare demonstrates the different kinds of love in the masterminded play of Hamlet. Shakespeare uses five different characters to show the different ways that you can love a person. Shakespeare personifies different kinds of love in Hamlet; Hamlets love for Ophelia, Claudius and Gertrude's love for each other, and Ophelia's brothers' love for her.

Hamlet loves Ophelia and demonstrates this love numerous times throughout the play. At the end of the play Ophelia dies, leaving the kingdom unsure if she killed herself or if the death was accidental. Even though the way of her death is unclear Hamlet is still hurt. "I loved Ophelia. Forty thousand brother could not with all their quality of love make up my sum" (5:1 273). Hamlet says this to show just how much he really does love Ophelia. Another weird love scene in the play is the love that is shared between Claudius and Gertrude. The king did somewhat love Gertrude for he told her, "Gertrude do not drink [the poisoned wine]" the reason that he told her this is because he know that she would not live if she were to even take a sip of the deadly wine. The king also tells a servant in the play just how much he really does love Gertrude. "full thirty time hath Phoebus' cart gone round, Neptune's salt wash and Tellus orbed ground, and thirty dozen moons with borrowed sheen about the world have times twelve thirties been, since our heart and hymen did our hands Unite commutual in most sacred bands" (3:2 153).
