Rock and Roll
* There were many musical sources that made up rock and roll. In fact most and if not all the "artists who could have been considered rock and musicians prior to 1955aE? were black except for Bill Haley and his comets. We first have saxophone which was made famous as a rock and roll instrument by "Jackie Brenston's solo on Rocket 88aE?. The electric blues guitar was introduced by T-Bone Walkers' "Call It Stormy MondayaE?, and later perfected by Chuck Berry. Professor Longhair brought the piano into the rock and roll scene by playing a mix of "offbeat Spanish beats and Calypso down beats.As for vocals go, they came mostly from rhythm and blues performers such as "Joe Turner, Ruth Brown, LaVern Baker.aE? Ray Browns' vocal talents also influenced Little Richard and Ray Charles. * There were a few factors that led to the independent record labels being able to compete with the major labels. First was that fact that major labels assumed that audiences would always "respond favorably to gentle changes in popular styles.aE? The introduction of rock and roll threw this assumption out the window. Another factor that helped this was the introduction of "poorly capitalized independent radio stations that were desperate for inexp
ensive programming.aE? The final factor that helped out this chain of events was the marvelous introduction of the "45 rpmaE? record. This thing allowed all the independent labels to produce mass amounts of music at a low price on an unbreakable medium that shipped at low cost Chicago was home to the "urbanized blues musiciansaE?. It was a city consisted of two main independent labels; Chess and Vee Jay. And out of these labels, came great names as Big Bill Broonzy, Sonny Boy Williamson, Willie Mabon, Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Bo Diddley, and Chuck Berry. * The first major figure of rock and roll that comes to mind is Chuck Berry. Before reading this chapter, it would have been Elvis, but after reading it, I learned that people believe if it hadn't been for the racial prejudice against blacks, Chuck Berry my have been the original king of Rock and Roll. Ritchie Valens is another figure in rock and roll who made a big impact. In fact Ritchie Valens is said to be Chicago's first rock and roll star. Laslty but not least, is Fats Domino's, who brought the R&B style to rock and roll. * If you were to ask Joseph McCarthy on who was to blame for the Soviet Union
