Snow in Augustand A Bronx Tale

In life children need someone they can look up to and try to model. The father figure or a role model in a child's life teaches him/her the values and everyday common things the child will need to be well respected and successful in life. The role model encourages the child to do well in school and also teaches the child useful things that the child wouldn't learn in school. The role model teaches the child good manners and proper behavior so the child isn't shunned in public.

The idea of having an important role model can be found in the novel SNOW IN AUGUST, by Pete Hamil, and the movie A BRONX TALE, directed by Robert DeNiro. In both the book and the movie a young boy has a father figure that teaches him how to go through life. In the book Michael Devlin has Rabbi Judah Hirsch as a father figure because his father had died in the war. The Rabbi gives him knowledge and brings out many things in Michael, such as courage, friendship, and trust. In the movie Calogero Anello learns the same things as Michael, but from his father Lorenzo, and the Mafia leader in his neighborhood, Sonny.

Someone to look up to or model is very important in life. Boys with fathers or father figures will turn out similar in the ways they act when they are older. Boys without a father type figure will turn out very different because they would only have their mother to look up to and talk to.

There is modeling going on in both stories in the book Michael is modeling the Rabbi. In the movie Calogero is modeling Lorenzo and Sonny. In the book Michael models the Rabbi by learning the Yiddish language. He learned how to read, write, and speak it. In the movie Calogero copies the way Sonny talks and moves his hands. Calogero also copies his dad on the bus, every time his father passes the church he crosses himself and Calogero does the same.

The father figures also teach the kids values. The Rabbi taught Michael that you should not keep quiet about a serious crime because it is just as much as a crime if you don't tell. Sonny tells Calogero that twenty dollars is nothing if you think of it in a good way. Sonny explains that Calogero got rid of someone really cheap, for only twenty dollars he doe
