Television Violence Affecting today's Brood"American children watch an average of three to fours hours of television daily. Television can be a powerful influence in developing value systems and shaping behavior." (www.aacap.org). Children in today's society get sidetracked with reality through television. The violence on television is exaggerated to extremes. Children watch shows like the Power Rangers, VR Troopers, and cartoons like Looney Toons and Digimon. All of these shows on television show violence. "Shortly after the debut of the popular program Power Rangers many parents and teachers observed an alarming increase in martial-arts-style aggression toward other children."(Gottesman 1999, 259). The shows show good versus evil, black versus white, God versus the devil. The way the good guys win is usually through destruction and or death of the bad guy. This influences children a great deal. A child might go out and hurt another child who they see as evil or someone bad.. Yes the parents may allow their children to watch these bad types of violent media on television. But it is also the fault of today's society. If society had not let television violence get out of hand and let media such as this be acceptable than we as a society may not have as severe of problems with today's youth. Children Just cant comprehend that what they see on television is not real. When they see their favorite character on television take out a bad guy they want to fallow in his or her footsteps and be cool. The child's who aspect on this is to be the best. The most powerful, and the most feared. They think if they can get to this standard that they will be the best. They just can understand that all of this entertainment that they are subjected to is not real. Music videos on stations like MTV and BET are also very influential.
