Thesis- Israel has preserved their culture, land, and well being by defending their borders stopping any attempt to disrupt the Jewish state. Israel is extremely different than their surrounding countries. Being very unique in their niche of the world has made Israel have some enemies. Other countries have tried to break Israel's back by constantly attacking all the hold sacred. Sometimes going to such extremes as to attack during religious holidays and killing children. Israel has preserved their place in the world by defending their borders and stopping any attempt to ruin the Jewish state. (World Book Online...par 6-7) In 1948 the UN decided to break Palestine up into two parts, one Arab the other Jewish. Theist created the state of Israel. The Arabs however, rejected the split. What was to come was Israel's first war. But instead of fighting one enemy they had to fight several. Armies were sent by Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon to fight the UN's decision. The result was the war of 1948-'49. The Arabs had an enormous strategic advantage. The Lebanese being characteristically unorganized and slow finally mounted an attack on June that same year. They attempted to sever resupply routes. It proved to be too much for the weary Israeli defenders and the Lebanese took the coveted spot on the route, Malkiya. Another Syrian attack was carried out and this time they won. (www.idf.il...) Many Paratroopers dropped into Egypt the night of October 29. They missed their drop zone by 5 kilometers. They were aiming for the obelisk named parker's Memorial. It tool awhile to regroup but soon the troops were dug in. This was the begging of the attempt to take the Gaza strip and Sinai Peninsula. They were working with the French and English to bring the Egyptians down. The Israelis most dominating and meaningful battle was the capture of Sharm el Sheikh. Israel was devastating Egypt with constant air strikes and bombings that inflicted heavy casualties. The Egyptian commander ordered that the borders be shrunk and the soldiers were redeployed to the main location. Israel was already Two days behind and if they didn't take their goal position the whole campaign would be fruitless. Israel air support bombed the target all day. Then they mounted a ground assault with tank support. The Egyptians beat them off and the Israeli forces retreated. An hour later the Israelis came back with tanks air support, napalm, and airborne. This wave proved to be more successful than the previous. The battle was over with 100 Egyptians dead. This also marked the end of the campaign. (Middle East Conflicts...) The UN issued a brief cease-fire. At this time Israel gained an Air Force, which meant little more than a way to scare their Arab adversaries. The Israli army took this time to regroup and get strength back. To the Egyptians the cease fire meat no more that a break in the action they knew that they would pick up fighting again eventually. The cease-fire was short lived and fight broke out 28 days after it was issued. As struggle with Iraq wore on the Jordians took the Old City with a hard fought close combat battle.
