When I was thinking of a written source of information on heart disease I thought I would try to find something in the encyclopedia. Then, I looked online for sources of information on some web sites that I thought might have some information on them. When I started thinking of human sources I thought about my family and other people I knew that had a heart problem. I decided to interview my grandfather and my aunt. When I was interviewing my aunt, my cousin and uncle volunteered to interviewed.

When I finished my research I realized that things are much more complicated than they seem when you have a better understanding of them. I also learned that men are overall more likely to die from heart. The fact that the death rate from heart disease for men was higher surprised me. This knowledge is useful to me, because I know many people with these diseases I now have a better understanding of. It can also help others if they read by report, because they may have a heart disease or know someone who does.

The heart is a functioning muscle and needs oxygen and fuel in order to work. The coronary arteries' job is to supply this oxygen and nutrients to the muscle. A Congenital Disorder is a defect that is present at birth. An Acquired Disorder is of or relating to a disease, condition, or characteristic that is not congenital but develops after birth. It results from exposure to something. Diseases of the heart may generally be classified as congenital or acquired. Congenital disorders result from the abnormal development of the fetal heart. Acquired heart diseases are due to the heredity, environmental, and infectious processes that damage the muscles of the heart, the coronary arteries, the heart valves, or the conduction tissue. Congenital heart defects complicate approximately eight out of every one thousand live births. Infants with heart diseases often demonstrate poor feeding and a failure to thrive. With rapid breathing and heart rates of one hundred and sixty to two hundred beats per minute they may be exhibiting respiratory distress. When going into respiratory distress the infant may be ashen or blue and perspire excessively. Most of the defects occur during the first trimester of pregnancy, when the heart and blood vessels formation takes place. Mothers infected with German Measles have been implicated as a causative factor. Alcohol use, drugs, smoking, exposure to radiation, and genetic disorders have also been implicated as causative factors. The most common malformation related to congenital disorders involves a hole between the two muscular pumping chambers of the heart. This malformation is called a Ventricular Septal Defect. This results in decreased blood flow to the lungs and Cyanosis, or Blue Baby Syndrome, the mixing between the right and left sides of the heart. The prognosis of infants born with congenital heart diseases has remarkably improved in recent decades. Over a dozen of the most commonly occurring congenital heart diseases can now be completely corrected or significantly improved with surgical procedures. Advances in treatments allow many of these children to lead normal adult lives. Cyanosis is a bluish coloration of the skin and mucous membranes resulting from inadequate oxygenation of the blood. A Ventricular Septal Defect is a common congenital heart defect. It is an abnormal opening in the septum dividing the ventricles allowing blood to pass directly from the left to the right ventricle, large openings may cause congestive heart failure. Tetrology of Fallot is a congenital malformation of the heart characterized by a defect in the ventricular septum, misplacement of the origin of the aorta, narrowing of the pulmonary artery, and enlargement of the right ventricle.

There are now newer devices that detect lethal arrhythmias and deliver an automatic electrical shock to change the rhythm back to normal. The management of most arrhythmias involves the long-term use of an arrhythmias medication. Another experimental treatment involves the surgical interruption of abnormal conduction pathways. An abnormal rhythm, or arrhythmia, may result in a slow heart rate, bradycardia, or a rapid heart rate, tachycardia. Arrhythmias may occur in the atrial or ventricular parts of the heart. Ventricular fillibration and tachycardia are examples of extremely lethal arrhythmais, which require immediate treatment with electrical stimulation or antiarrh
