Androscoggin Humane society

A detailed Summary of Androscoggin Humane society

The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society has dedicated its time and efforts into helping and protecting unwanted and unloved animals. Their purpose and goals are to help the animals find a permanent loving home and to prevent cruelty to animals at all cost. The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society has been known by many other names in the past and has recently chosen the name that started it all. They were once known as the Lewiston-Auburn Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and the Androscoggin County Humane Society. The Androscoggin County Humane Society was first established on February 25, 1885. Many well-known and important members of the Lewiston-Auburn community instituted the Androscoggin County Humane Society. Nelson M. Dingley Jr., who was a member of the U.S. Congress, was offered the position of presidency of the Androscoggin County Humane Society. He accepted the position and was the first active president for the Androscoggin County Humane Society. In 1912, the Androscoggin County Humane Society wanted to purchase land and to build a shelter for abused and abandoned animals. The idea was later dismissed because of the lack of funds and resources available to Humane Society but the efforts

to help the animals continued with great enthusiasm. In the 1970's, the Androscoggin County Humane Society urged the board of directors to organize a fund-raising committee. Soon after, the Androscoggin County Humane Society received a rather large donation allowing them to purchase land and to build an animal shelter in the Lewiston -Auburn community. The shelter was opened in 1972 and is still located on the Poland Spring Road in Auburn. The shelter was intended to handle 1,000 animals but approximately handles 3,500 today; far more than the shelter itself can handle.
