Discipline Among Children and Solutions for our Society
Almost everyday in the news, we hear about a problem with undisciplined children. Sometimes there is a report of a school shooting or a child who went on a rampage against his entire family. It is absurd that the United States, one of the most powerful countries in the world, cannot control a situation like this. Children are our future. Parents should be in charge of most of the discipline in their lives. Schools are for education, not just discipline. When children are not punished, they think they can get away with anything. One of the few legal punishments is grounding. This makes children more rebellious. Corporal punishment is a very controversial issue in our society today. In our society today we have people for and against corporal punishment. Usually the conservatives are for corporal punishment because they believe that the older generations that were subject to it did not have the same problems as today. While the liberals that are against corporal punishment believe that issues with violence in our children have not been proven to be a direct result of corporal punishment. Although there may not be many immediate solutions to the growing number of problems with discipline in children, there is enough that we can do now to minimize future problems in our society of growing kids. If Americans work together to develop firm guidelines for disciplining our children then we may be able to decrease the magnitude of disciplinary problems in our future. It was believed then because imprisonment and fines are ruled out for children, many people believe that corporal punishment will get the point across to the young juveniles. Some say that when a child has been spanked, they will not do anything again for fear that they will be spanked again. There is danger in spanking because it confuses the child on what is right and wrong. The infliction of corporal punishment creates hypocrisy. Corporal punishment creates hypocrisy because, you are hurting the child when they are wrong, but that doesn't teach the child, because to hit is also wrong. Two wrongs do not make a right. One solution would definitely be not to spank children. Instead of spanking children we must teach more effective ways to communicate. We must teach children right from wrong, don't hit them when they are wrong. Education is a great thing. Not only do we need to educate children; we need to educate parents and society. In order to do this the government needs place education as its number one priority. Because there will be no tomorrow if we teach no one today. Mostly parents are to blame for the way a child will act. The old solutions such as teaching your child respect for the law, communicating with your child and spending more time together as a family have failed to be successful in the discipline of children because those solutions need to be accompanied by more stringent ways of control. Although some may disagree with the use of corporal punishment on children it seems clear that our current methods for disciplining children have failed. My father told me that when he was a boy of 12 or 13 he would put a rifle over his shoulder and ride his bicycle down public highways to go hunting with his friend. Today if a young boy did the same thing the police would be called to take the dangerous weapon away from the boy.
