Ernest Hemingway is often referred to as the most influential writer of prose. He was awarded the Nobel peace prize for literature in 1954. In the message he prepared on receipt of the prize he showed his attitude toward writing when he declared ".... for a true writer each book should be a new beginning, were he tries again for something that is beyond attainment. He should always try for something that has never been done, or that others have tried and failed. Then sometimes, with great luck, he will succeed. How simple the writing of literature would be if it were only necessary to write in another way what has been well written. It is because we have made such great writers in the past that a writer is driven far out past were no one can help him (Monarch)." A Farewell To Arms is often thought of as an embellished interpretation of what Hemingway experienced while in Italy. One of his most well known descriptions occurs in the first chapter when he writes "The trunks of the trees too were dusty and the leaves fell early that year and we saw the troops marching along the road and the dust rising and leaves, stirred by the breeze, falling and the soldiers marching and afterward the road bare and white except for the leaves (Spark Notes)." This line seems to have a deeper underlying meaning that supports the theme of the novel. The entire paragraph is a metaphor for what war does to people that it affects, the soldiers represent war and the leaves represent the people. As war passes through it breaks apart countries and towns and leaves them separated and unprotected. This type of metaphor occurs numerous times throughout the novel and is well hidden by Hemingway to make the novel enjoyable on any reading level. Hemingway's vibrant imagery in For Whom the Bell Tolls is very evident from the first paragraph as he describes Robert Jordan, the main character, laying on pine needles and noticing how the wind blew the tops of the trees above. This instance of imagery is only the beginning of a sensory journey that any reader will take as they read his novels. This constant pursuit of perfection by Hemingway on each page guides the reader into Hemingway's head making it difficult to disagree with his beliefs because he uses such detailed imagery that he makes the reader want to believe what he says is uncontaminated truth.
