James Russell Lowell stated, "Education is an ornament in prosperity, and a refuge in adversity." (Hurtford, 55)Lowell indicates that education is where there is success, and a safe haven where this is hardship. Educators once thought that dyslexic children could not succeed or have an education that would lead them to prosperity. The educators began to seek ways to help the situation. Now-a-day, teaching methods and appliances have dramatically improved life for dyslexic children.Over time there have been many different types of meanings for dyslexia. Dr. Samuel Torrey Orton defined dyslexia as a "cross lateralization of the brain." (Davis 8) This meant that the left side of the brain was doing what the right side of the brain was supposed to do, and the right side doing the job of the left side. Today this is not the proper definition of dyslexia. Researchers have concluded that "dyslexia is a lack of coordination between sight and sound. It is a generalized disturbance of language function that interferes with the acquisition of reading skills." Computers have impacted the life of dyslexic children greatly. One student stated, "They make such a huge difference. Taking notes, for example: If I try to take notes in class, I have to continually look at my notes and up at the teacher, this makes me dizzy. With the computer, and because I can touch-type, I only have to look at the teacher or at the board." (Hurtford 191) In order to help a dyslexic child in their home life, parents must offer humor when the pressure is too much so they do not feel so tense. Dyslexic children are to participate and have responsibilities at home, such as to set the table, to maintain his room clean, or to take out the garbage. These values are placed upon the child so they do not feel left out, or even more disabled in their home life. As a dyslexic child becomes more aware of his disability, he may become more interested about it, giving him the opportunity to challenge himself in succeeding and overcoming the disability. However, this may not be the same to every dyslexic child. There are many examples of dyslexic children who will begin to feel unintelligent, and feel as though he is not worthy to learn. Many dyslexic children need psychological help for their negativity and lack of interest to learn. (45) "Dyslexics and other learning disabled children often need some counseling in addition to remedial aid to help the issues around their disability and the lack of self-worth that so often accompanies it." (Crockferd, 10K) Once the dyslexic child undergoes the stages to improving, he will feel more confident about himself because he is aware of his triumph in improving his disability. The dyslexic child, who did not feel so great about himself, may change his view soon after he undergoes the treatment. After learning strategies and techniques to help improve their school like, they begin to put themselves at a higher rank and do not feel as different as the other children who do not suffer from the disability because they notice the progress they are making in their school work. During the process of improving their education, the child will learn new methods and techniques to prosper emotionally and mentally. "If you have a handicap, this is the era to be handicapped in." (Smith 209) The twenty-first century must be one of the greatest times to have a disabled child. The research and technology and has improved spectacularly for all types of children. Dyslexic children have been given a chance to improve themselves in every aspect of living due to up to date teaching methods and appliances that have successfully improved life for them. Dyslexics have difficulty recalling words since their brain does not react quick enough to take in what is being said. Reading books to their level is a great way to improve their vocabulary because they will continue to revise words they already know. After each level of reading they are able to identify words. Games are tools that can be used to increase a child's spelling and vocabulary skills. Two of the most well known games for dyslexic children are puzzles and mazes. Puzzles develop skills in separating each letter for a better view of the word. Mazes develop critical thinking for a dyslexic child, giving him a challenge to overcome. Games for dyslexic children give them a feeling of understanding for what they are learning. When a child wins a game he has a sense of accomplishment, as a result increasing the child's self-esteem.
