The Color Purple had many tragic scenes through out the story and hardships on the characters. Many terrible things happened to the characters of The Color Purple. The characters that were mostly impacted by terrible events and hardships were mostly Celie and Sofia. These characters went through a great deal of problems and disasters.
Celie is the main character of The Color Purple. Her parents don't care about her. Celie is fourteen years old. Her father, Alphonso, raped her and told her, "You better not never tell nobody but God. It'll kill your mammy." He constantly tells her that she is "evil an always up to no good." Celie begins keeping a journal written as letters to God. She asks God to give her guidance because she does not understand what has happened to her. She gives birth to two children from her father, Adam and Ol

Sofia is also another character in The Color Purple that goes through many hardships, but she tries to fight back to stay strong. Sofia is Harpo's wife. She is an independent woman. When Harpo tries to beat her into submitting to him like Celie submits to Mr., she fights back, often beating him worse than he beats her. Eventually she becomes tired of his behavior and leaves him with their five children; the mayor's wife admires Sofia's children in town one day and asks Sofia if she would like to be her maid. Sofia replies, "hell no." The mayor slaps Sofia, and Sofia punches him. The mayor arrest her and take her to jail. Mr. persuades the sheriff to let them see her.
