Fredrick Douglas

The Narrative of The Life of Frederick Douglass is a book that touched me a great deal. Before reading this book I had mixed views about slavery. Now that I have actually read it and have a greater understanding of the issue at hand, I clearly developed my own views about it. I feel that slavery is not justified and is immoral.

My name is Natty Bumpo and I am 45 years old. As a resident of Rochester, New York, slavery is an issue that isn't all too familiar to me. Since I am not exposed to the daily life of a slave on a plantation, I am not to aware of the harsh treatment being put upon slaves. In being an owner of a furniture factory, I do not need the labor that slaves are known for. After reading this book I was devastated to find out the truth that has been hidden by slave owners.

I have learned that slaves weren't even considered as people. They were treated like animals whose soul purpose in life was to adhere to the strict rules of his owner. When Frederick Douglass described the monthly allowance that a slave receives, I was absolutely heart broken. Innocent little children would walk around with minimal clothing and once that was ruined; they would walk around naked. These children work

After hearing Finney preach I am against any form of sin, and this treatment can be seen as sin at its highest point. Slaves have no say in their own lives and no madder what their feelings are, they are wrong, "to be accused was to be convicted, and to be convicted was to be punished." (Douglass, 12) Later on in the book, Douglass shows the attempts of justification for the cruelty to slaves, "I have seen him tie up a lame young woman, and whip her with a heavy cowskin upon her naked shoulders, causing the warm red blood to drip; and, in justification of the bloody deed, he would quote this passage of Scripture-"He that knoweth his master's will, and doeth it not, shall be beaten with many stipes." (Douglass, 33)

There were no excuses for the workers to stop whether they were sick, tired, or in pain. When Mr. Covey heard the noise of the wheat fan stop, he went over to Frederick Douglass and proceeded to beat him. When he got up and stumbled to the ground, the blows continued to come. He was expected to suck up the pain and continue to manage the fan. It was not acceptable unless the maximum effort was put in. These acts of violence went unpunished by law, and therefore the truth behind slavery remained hidden.

I would suggest that anyone that has not read this book yet do so. In
