Beowulf

A detailed Summary of Beowulf

The Anglo-Saxons have a very different lifestyle in comparison to people in today's society. The Anglo-Saxons lead a life full of difficult struggle against constant enemies, and their two greatest passions include war and wandering. Although in the modern world people often deal with enemies or foes, people deal with them without having to struggle greatly. Instead of supporting and endorsing war, society today tends to avoid it and prevent it. The Anglo-Saxons also have many values and ideals, and honor certain morals such as fate or wyrd controlling human destiny, allegiance to the lord or the king as the social virtue most prized, or even that one must repress sentiment. These types of beliefs often contrast with the principles respected today. The Anglo-Saxons and modern society share similar views on some values such as the love of glory and the importance of materialistic items, although certain values honored in the past have changed, improved, or adjusted throughout time to benefit the type of society present today.

The Anglo-Saxon's along with today's society both have similar values pertaining to their love for materialistic items, such as money or treasures. For example, after Beowulf had

During the time of the Anglo-Saxons and now in the modern world, an act of violence would be defined in two completely different definitions. In the epic, when Beowulf attempted to kill Grendel, Grendel's mom, or even the dragon, people in the epic advocated this killing act and often times urged Beowulf to do it. Anyone and everyone could kill or go into battle with whomever they pleased. For example, when Beowulf came from the Geats to help the Danes' to fight off the monster Grendel who seemed to be killing all the thanes from Herot Hall, Hrothgar and the Danes supported Beowulf to kill Grendel. Instead of feeling sorrow or remorse for the death of Grendel, they celebrated. Furthermore, when Hathcyn accidentally killed his older brother Herbald, Hathcyn faced no penalty or punishment. In modern times, the government enforces laws and regulations. People pay consequences when they have committed a crime or wrongdoing. If that scenario had occurred today, although considered an accident, severe actions would take place and Hathcyn would not get away with such a serious crime. Although violence, battle and killing do take place, society today does not actually endorse or accept it. In modern times people try and discover alternative methods to solve problems. There are guidelines and limitations to be followed concerning violence. For example, if a person kills another person in today's society, the person is considered a murderer and has charges pressed against them or is put in jail. The interpretation of violence basically depends on the values taught to one growing up, and in comparison to Anglo-Saxon times, people today have grown up to believe in a more civil and stricter way
