Censorship

Censorship, what is it? Is it good for us or bad for us? How does sexuality portrayed in the media factor into censorship? Why should we censor? Censorship is the act of not allowing to be seen or heard anything that is obscene, libelous, or objective. This is either a single official or a committee with power to censor.

Society has many forms of censorship in effect now. We have censorship in the movie industry and we call it ratings. The current ratings are G for general audiences, PG for movies with parental guidance, PG-13 for movies in which no one under the age of 13 are supposed to see, R for movies which no one under the age of 17 are permitted to see and lastly X for movies in which no one but adults are permitted to see. A committee that has the power to determine what is appropriate for that certain movie rating set the ratings forth. We also put cautionary statements on music, video games so that parents will know what is appropriate. The censorship we have now works well. The problem c


What happens when there are no guidelines, no censorship? We would hear about there being no social expectations. We might see more sexual harassment in the workplace. In the Janus report, 45% of women and 19% of men have been sexually harassed on their jobs. We have seen divorce rates go up. We have absent or self-involved parents rearing children who are out of control. The family is in big trouble. We see young adults living together without the benefit of marriage. Teenagers are having babies at staggering rates. Nearly one million mothers under 18 were giving birth every year. As many as 10,000 young girls age 12 or younger, become pregnant every year. (Janus 1993) All these things are influenced by no censorship in our society.
