Devine Command Theory
Trolley driver, Edward, has to make a decision. He can either let the trolley run its natural course and kill five people or pull the switch to turn and kill one person. What should Edward do? As a Divine Command Theorist, I believe one should do as God commanded, Jesus being the one and only God, I believe the right thing to do is pray. The first thing I would do is worry, and God says not to worry but pray and God will grant you what you need (Phil. 4:6-7). I also know the God I serve; He is able to do exceedingly, abundantly all that I could ever ask for (Eph. 2:10). So in my prayers I would ask God to deliver these people from death and believe He will. Jesus assures us that we can have what we ask in prayer if we do not doubt (Matt. 21:21-22). So in Edward's situation one simple prayer could change his situation around. And I could go on and on and on about what the possibilities could be but God's thoughts are higher than ours and also His ways (Isaiah 55:8-10). The first objection to the Devine Command Theory is how does one know what God commands. Simply put it is revealed through the bible. The bible is the true Word of God. In receiving Jesus as your Savior, the Messiah, God gives you the Holy Spir
it. The Holy Spirit is our Counselor, He will guide you into all truth. He will reveal to you secrets about God. Through the Holy Spirit we know that the bible is the truth, and we believe the bible(John 16:5-15). All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right (2 Tim. 3:16-17). In considering the Divine Command Theory, philosophers come to the conclusion that either (a) God commands certain things because they are right or (b) certain things are right because God commanded them. If we roll with option (a) right and wrong would be independent of God. This is false. God is the establisher of right and wrong. In the beginning when God created the earth and made the first humans, god commanded Adam and Eve not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:16-18). This was the first rule established on earth, in the universe, ever, by God. Adam and Eve were disobedient to this command, they committed a sin, they were wrong. French Painter, Paul Gauguin, abandoned his job, his wife, and his children to pursue his dream as an artist. As a Divine Command Theorist, I believe one should do as God commanded, Jesus being the one and only God, the right thing for him to do is to honor the covenant that he made with his wife; till death do us part. Gods Word is full of His promises he made with His people. God desires that we follow His example (Eph. 5: 1-2). Keep our covenant, promises. Marriage is a lifetime commitment (1 Cor. 7: 39) and God says that divorce is wrong (Matt. 19:3-12). Also Paul is responsible for his children (Eph. 6:4). Paul went against God's commands. He broke the covenant he made with his wife and he walked out on his children not assuming the responsibilities he should. One thing that I will admit is wrong with the Devine Command Theory is the fact that not every one believes in God, Jesus, therefore one cannot receive the bible as the Word of God. If one does not believe that all of God's Word is true one cannot reap all the benefits of God's Word and all that God has to give. This theory can work for the believer only.
