In William Shakespeare's Hamlet, great corruption is plaguing the country of Denmark. This corruption causes great tragedy to occur. Death and suffering are the punishment to these corrupt people. In Hamlet, corruption is seen in nearly every facet of this play: the moral, the political, the mental, and the spiritual aspects.
The first area of corruption in Hamlet is the moral aspect of the play. Under the rule of Hamlet's father, the country of Denmark had no bad reptuation. King Hamlet was a just and noble ruler with the country's best interests in mind. When Claudius becomes king the country's interests are not a main concern to him. Another area of corruption that is seen in the play is the political corruption. When Claudius takes control and transforms the country of Denmark into a country filled with drunkards, this causes the people of the country to lose all respect for the royal family. When Laertes arrives to avenge his father's death this is evident. The people quickly support him and begin to scream "'Laertes shall be king, Laertes king.'"(4.5). The people of Denmark would quickly accept a new ruler that would rule their country justly.
Spiritual corruption is the most evident in Claudius. He has killed a man and feels the remorse that comes with doing such a deed. He prays to God because he feels so terribly about what he has done. Yet, he will not ask for forgiveness. This is because if Claudius were to ask for forgiveness he would lose all his possessions. This would happen
