The five symbols that I saw in the first few moments of this film are the Stars of David, the menorah, the image of the torah, ark of covenant, and the tallit.

The life for a poor Jewish peasant in turn of the century Russia was like a traditional being, who is accepted by a small community. The poor Jews have no guarantee of life, or any insurance to stay in the town. Also, their freedom to live in the town can be taken away any time from them by the governing power. THe men was to bring news to the family and to make income for the family. Another hand, the women is to stay home doing housework, as well as take good care of the children.
