Murder

A detailed Summary of Murder

Murder is the unlawful killing of a human being with the desire to harm; the unlawful killing of a person under certain circumstances for example during the committing of a serious felony or when accompanied by cruelty or torture etc.; killing that is morally punishable and brutal. Capital punishment involves the forfeiture of life, which means depriving someone the right to live. Abortion is the induced expulsion from the womb of a nonviable human fetus. In this paper I will discuss arguments for and against both capital punishment and abortion as well as state my own opinion on both issues.

One of the arguments in favor of capital punishment is that it is a just and fair punishment for people who commit murder. Murder is the most terrible crime and "anything less than death penalty is an insult to society. It says, in effect, that we don't value the victim's life enough to punish the killer fully"(Bender, 70). Another argument is that the death penalty protects society from murderers. "Capital punishment is an act of restitution and demonstrates that a society and legal system are genuinely dedicated to preserving and protecting the rights and safety of the people"(Bender, 85). A third argument in favor of the death p

Durrett, Deanne. The Abortion Conflict. Enslow Publishers, Inc. 2000.

One argument against abortion is that abortion is murder. " Abortion is not the same as killing in self-defense, nor is it the same as capital punishment, each of which assumes that the one who dies is guilty of some great evil. Instead, it is the killing of an innocent fetus"(Currie, 24). Another argument is that the child feels the pain during the abortion. "You can see from the moment the tip of the suction machine starts to move, the fetus knows it and starts to scuttle to the top of the uterus. You can see her mouth the child moving more rapidly. Even the breathing increases. So there is no question this child feels pain, and actually senses danger"(Currie, 102). Having an abortion is also harmful to a woman's health. "Injuries to the cervix and uterus may cause miscarriage in later pregnancies; abortion procedures are painful for the woman and torture for the unborn child"(Durrett, 48). There are other alternatives to having an abortion. "Placing a child for adoption is a very caring and loving act"(Durrett, 53).

I feel that abortion is not murder because when a woman goes for an abortion she does not have the intent to hurt her child, but protect it or herself in one way or another. "The fetus is at best a potential human being and not yet an actu
