Grendel

This novel is mainly based on Grendel's self-destruction; this was most evident in the last five chapters. In the last chapters Grendel destroys himself, he realizes that a persons life is already determined by a higher power and that the things that happen are accidental. Grendel ends up losing faith, he believes that he serves no purpose. During the second half of this novel, after he had encountered the dragon, Grendel becomes more and more evil until he has met his match. The battle between Grendel and Beowulf was the challenge that Grendel was waiting for his whole life. He was sick of the usual effortless killings of the innocent Danes. This battle had great significance seeing that it was ultimately what caused Grendel's death. While the battle was going on Grendel confuses Beowulf for the dragon because they use almost the same style of speech and mannerisms. When Grendel encountered Beowulf he had said something quite similar to that of the dragon, this is what made Grendel confused of his identity. Beowulf said to Grendel while they were fighting; "A meaningless swirl in the stream of time, a temporary gathering of b
